The Pantry That Didn’t Exist

Sometimes the most important thing missing from a floor plan isn’t obvious on paper.

While reviewing plans for a client’s new home, I noticed that the kitchen had very little provision for pantry storage. Under different circumstances, that might have been a minor inconvenience. For these clients, it mattered.

They lived on an island accessible by private ferry. A quick trip to the grocery store wasn’t always quick, so keeping additional pantry staples and household supplies on hand was simply part of how they lived.

The plan needed to respond to that.

The Challenge

The original floor plan provided the major spaces the clients needed, but it didn’t include adequate pantry storage near the kitchen.

Adjacent to the kitchen was a generously sized laundry room. The question became: could some of that space work harder?

What I Noticed

The laundry room had enough square footage to function well without using all of the space allocated to it.

More importantly, its location created an opportunity.

By carving out a portion of the laundry room and creating access directly beside the refrigerator, we could introduce the pantry exactly where it would be most useful—without increasing the overall footprint of the home.

The Recommendation

Reconfigure a portion of the laundry room to create a dedicated pantry with direct access from the kitchen.

It was a relatively small adjustment to the plan, but one based specifically on the way these clients lived.

The Outcome

The clients gained convenient pantry storage immediately adjacent to the kitchen while retaining a functional laundry room.

And because the change was identified during the planning stage, it could be incorporated before construction made the solution more complicated and expensive.

Good plan review goes beyond asking whether everything fits. It considers routines, movement, storage, priorities—and how the people who will live there actually use their home.

Sometimes the best design opportunity is simply finding the space that wasn’t on the plan.
